ABOUT OUR BOARD GAME

We want to share our dedication to marine life by helping you understand more about it. Our board game is designed to be both a fun and educational way to foster great respect as well as profound passion towards the Earth we inhabit. Instructions

In the midst of a manic marine crisis where plastic pollution clouds your sight and eutrophication is suffocating, the aim of the game is to fight for your place at the haven. Whether you have the wings of the Balearic Shearwater or the tough shell of the Hawksbill Turtle, there are many twists and turns throughout the game which could set you back or propel you forward.

Now to start the game, you must each roll the dice. The player with the highest number begins the game and the play passes to the left player in clockwise order. Once the beginning player has been decided, you must each roll the dice to determine the number of spaces you can move forward. The tile you land on may have a symbol on it, each symbol represents a different consequence you must face - good or bad. Scroll down to learn more about what the different symbols mean.

The Symbols

These symbols are integral to our board game and determine the fate of your marine character. Inspired by the characteristic features of marine life as well as the challenges it faces, these symbols each have a different consequence if your character lands on it.

Sea Shell

Shaped as a question, this sea shell indicates that you must attempt a question from a challenge card. Another player shall read the question to you from the category of the same colour as the sea shell. Answer correctly to receive the rewards that will get you closer and closer to the Haven.

Chance Card

When your marine character lands on this symbol, you must pick a chance card from the pile. These can either be an advantage card or a disadvantage card. Picking an advantage card gets you closer to reaching the haven, meanwhile a disadvantage card can set you or other players further back.

Oil spill

Landing on this symbol means that you must miss a round of the game as you are stuck in an oil spill.

How it works

Chance cards are crucial to the game, they decide the fate of your marine character. There are three chance card categories: advantage, disadvantage and challenge. Advantage cards will either power you forward or stop you from being affected by obstacles thrown your way. Disadvantage cards are different; the card can either affect you only, or it can affect your fellow marine friends. And finally, answer the challenge cards correctly and you will gain a reward! But if you are wrong, then you must face the consequences. Read more to find out about each chance card.

Rare advantage

This chance card, if stumbled across, allows you access to the Gulf Stream - an extremely rare shortcut to help you chase the Haven.

Personal Advantage

Swap a card with another player in order to celebrate the marine organisation that are constantly putting in effort to protect your marine character from harm.

Personal advantage

Move your marine character to the sunlit zone if you pick up this card. This means your character has a new route to the safety of the Haven.

Personal Advantage

Efforts to reduce waste pollution of the ocean using ocean bins means that you can move more freely through your path.

Personal Advantage

River cleanups have allowed your character a clear path in the pursuit of a place at the Haven. This card allows you to move either 2 steps forwards or 2 steps backwards =

Block Card Advantage

This block card can be used against a series of disadvantage cards. If you pick up either an ocean warming or acidification card then you may use this to escape the disadvantage. If a player attempts to sabotage you with a gas car card, then block their attempt with this.

Block Card Advantage

In the case that an oil spill card is picked up, just hope that you have already picked up this block card. This card protects you from oil spills and you won’t be affected by them

Block Card Advantage

In the situation where someone uses the fisheries sabotage card against you, escape the consequences with this card. By entering the marine protected area you can also be protected from the disadvantages of habitat destruction

Block Card Advantage

This block card is used in the case of a certain disadvantage. This card specifically blocks ocean acidification. However while this is a great advantage to you, your marine character is still vulnerable to overfishing and other disadvantages.

Reflect Card Advantage

This card allows you to reflect sabotage cards. You escape the disadvantage and the player who attacked you must suffer their own consequence. These consequences are different for each reflect card.

Personal Disadvantage

This personal disadvantage usually affects your marine character only. However, in this example, there is an option to save your species in the game over another.

Personal Disadvantage

Based on the current marine crisis, these disadvantage cards offer an insight into the hardships faces by vulnerable marine creatures. This card in the game set you back to the pervious checkpoint due to ocean drilling, simulating the set backs that marine creatures face on a daily basis.

External Disadvtanage

An external disadvantage card affects another player in order to save your marine species. This is a harsh reality within the marine world however it is necessary for your character to survive and reach the haven.

External Disadvtanage

An external disadvantage card with a twist! This card allows you to assume a persona which is different to your marine character. In this card, all players are affected by the persona of a commuter who has increased carbon emissions.

Challenge Card

These challenge cards have questions relating to one of several categories.

One of your opponents will pick up the card and choose a category for you to answer depending on the colour of the shell, or their own judgement.

What inspired us to make Coral Chasers?

Get to Know Us

Concordia is forever tethered to our four Cs: conservation, creativity, courage and community.

Merging these four values created the space for our board game, Coral Chasers, to be born.

Marine life suffers many battles with climate change and we believe that raising awareness of this through our marine inspired board game will raise a community willing to fight for underwater life.

Our journey to creating this board game was not smooth sailing, and initial ideas did not even gravitate towards a game.

Many hours of effort and dedication allowed us an insight into many ideas that could ultimately realise our marine mission. From recycled jewellery to pop up books, it was this board game Coral Chasers that sparked our creativity.

As a company, we entered the Euronext Blue Challenge - a competition about the blue economy. Our passion for the blue economy gave us the courage to bring our board game to fruition.

Made for a range of ages, Coral Chasers wants to light up the depth of your passion to restore harmony with the marine world. Every species, character and habitat that features of the board game only inspires us even more to see our goals come to life!
